T-Bird and the Old Jail, 12 x 16 oil on panel
Set on the side of a mountain, the old mining town of Jerome, Arizona provides a 20 mile view across the valley. On this cloudy, rainy day I was scouting for a painting and was captivated
by the lovely blue horizon. Then this red car and yellow ochre building facade jumped in front of it. SOLD

Fall Colors Up North, 7 x 11, oil on panel
Rose Lake, 16 x 20 oil on panel
Painted during a Grand Marais Art Colony winter plein air event. A dozen or so artists gathered at Camp Menogyn on Bearskin Lake for a week of outdoor painting and camaraderie. On this gray day a few of us hiked to this overlook. What a shape the snowcovered lake made!
Morning on Sneffles Range, 7 x 24 oil on panel
Gettysburg: View from Little Round Top, 12 x 20 oil on panel
Painted just before a rain at the Hallowed Ground in Pennsylvania.
I'm looking north up the fishhook line the Union troops formed toward the end of the 3-day battle. This pastoral view shows some of the fields where so many lost their lives. Just beyond the big mass of trees, center right, is where the 1st Minnesota performed so heroically. Quite a story. Look it up.
Shetlands, Spring, 8 x 10 oil on panel
These furry critters are cute, but the bright yellow hay on the rich, poopy mud was truly beautiful.
Setting Sun at the Mine, 11 x 17 oil on panel
This contraption used to take miners down into a shaft said to be deeper than the Empire State Building is tall. After a morning of painting nearby in the old mining town of Jerome, Arizona, I looked forward to the afternoon, when the mountain would cast its shadow across the valley and the colors of the landscape would get richer and deeper. In order to paint the viewpoint I wanted, where the tower would intersect the horizon, I needed to stand on a slope of loose, broken rock. By the time I finished, it was dark and freezing. I accidentally kicked over my open knapsack, sending it tumbling down the slope, scattering stuff everywhere. Brushes, paint tubes, cell phone, keys. I spent the next half hour crawling up and down the rubble, praying the rental car keys would find my hands. They did.
Tipi at Cottonwood, 8 x 10 oil on panel
I love when the sun comes out late on a rainy day and deep blue clouds hang on to the horizon. They make a gorgeous backdrop for the sunlit ground.
Minnesota Mountain, Fall, 12 x 20 oil on panel
Painted in Cook County, Minnesota in late September when the maples were peaking. The wire fence interrupts the splendor of the colors on the mountain, but that's the way life goes sometimes.

Cornfield and Barn, 12 x 16 oil on panel
The summer was advancing and, despite being a midwestern painter, I hadn't painted corn yet, let alone a barn. Subject aside, this is an exploration (art speak alert) of the tension between flatness, modeling, and atmospheric perspective.
SOLD
Dressage Saddles, 12 x 16 oil on panel SOLD
The Angle, Gettysburg, 12 x 20 oil on panel
Painted on location at the Hallowed Ground in Pennsylvania.
This tree is fairly recent growth, but 146 years ago, on a hot July afternoon, this stone wall is about as far as old Bobby Lee's boys got. The Confederates crossed this mile-long field from the tree line on Seminary Ridge. As I looked across, I tried to imagine what was in their minds as they stepped into the open, knowing it was unlikely they would survive the hour.
New Market Haybales, 12 x 16 oil on panel

White Barn, 16 x 20” oil on panel

Rustic Barn Painting, 7 x 11 oil on panel
Being known as a painter of suburb-scapes and urban construction, it may seem as though I don’t like to paint rustic buildings, but barns like this embody so much history — the weathered wood, the encroaching grasses, the tilting creep toward collapse — painting scenes like this is in the DNA of every landscape painter.
Campfire, 12 x 16 oil on panel
Painted with pals off the Gunflint Trail near the Loon Lake. Chosen “Best Nocturne” at Grand Marais Plein Air 2015.
SOLD
Country Mailbox, 8 x 10 oil on panel
The midday summer sun tends to bleach out everything it touches, but if there's a spot of color to be found, I'll paint it.
