Parley Lake Orchard and Vinyard, 30 x 40 oil on canvas.
Started out in the field and finished in the studio.
Tall Pines
20 x 12 oil on panel
Painted on location from the deck of the folks’ cabin in Webb Lake, Wisconsin. For years I’ve scouted possible light effects up there to paint . My favorite is this one just before sunset, the shadow that the cabin casts inches up the trees on the slope .
Hammock and Blossoms, 12 x 16 oil on panel. SOLD
Breezy Willows and Cattails, 12 x 20 oil on panel.
Painted on location at Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis.

Road to the Lake, 12 x 126 oil on panel. Painted on location in Otter Tail County, Minnesota.
Across the Bay, 16 x 12 oil on panel. This is a scene in the Boundary Waters up by the border. It’s always nice when you’re sitting on a rock and the sun is setting behind you, gracing the opposite shore with warmth.
Yellow Tree and Purple Asters, 16 x 12, oil on panel
Painted on location, Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden in Theodore Wirth Park, Minneapolis. SOLD
Tamarack Bog, 12 x 20, oil on panel.

Painted on location at one of the jewels of the Minneapolis parks.
Birches, 12 x 16 oil on panel
On the Bank of Minnehaha Creek, 7 x 11 oil on panel
I’ve painted this tree in different seasons and light. Something in the way it moves, attracts me like no other…tree.
A Patch of Light
8 x 10 oil on panel
Painted on location at the end of the Gunflint Trail, up near the Canadian border. Love the color of moss.

Misty Pond, 11 x 7, oil on panel
Fall Maples at Lake Harriet, 8 x 10 oil on panel SOLD
Mary Beth’s Maple, 16 x 12 oil on panel
So much beautiful color in the spring when everything is fresh. When the cool blue sky reflects on these deep reddish leaves, the color is almost purple. I love that.
Sun-drenched Conifers, 16 x 20 oil on panel
I found this little group of pines near Lake Hiawatha in Minneapolis. The spring flourish of yellow dandelions and purple scilla were fun complimentary colors, but mostly I was after that cool green in the baby pine.
Little Cabin in the Woods, 8 x 10 oil on panel
Rebirth After the Fire, 11 x 14 oil on panel
This area burned in the 2011 Pagami Creek wildfire, but many tree
trunks are still standing. On this day, the sun had just come out after a thunderstorm. The dark clouds created a beautiful backdrop for the bare sunlit branches.
Sierra Nevada Pines, 16 x 12 oil on panel
Winter Shoreline, 10 x 8, oil on panel
Dusk Over Minnehaha Creek, 8 x 10, oil on panel

Maple on Pleasant Avenue, 36 x 18 oil on panel
Gotta love the glow of maples in the fall.
Red Point, 16 x 12 oil on panel
This is an exercise with a more limited color palette. There are many outcroppings like this in the Boundary Waters, with a tree or two clinging to the rocks.
Autumn Bright, 12 x 16 oil on panel
White Blossoms, Lake Harriet Garden, 12 x 20 oil on panel
At the south end of the public rose garden is a clump of trees that explode with these lovely blossoms every spring. Quel parfum raffiné!
Fallen Tree, 12 x 20 oil on panel
One July in northwestern Wisconsin, straight-line winds took down hundreds of trees. I can only imagine the heart-breaking crack this one made. Its twisted, exposed anatomy was beautiful. Selected for the 2011 Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition.
Spring Colors, 18 x 24 oil on panel
Fort in the Woods, 12 x 16 oil on panel
The angles created by this fort's charmingly novice carpentry, and the spring greens showing through every negative space, all conspired to make me sit in the pine needles and get covered in ticks.
Sun Bleached Autumn, 12 x 16 oil on panel
This is an example of direct light, where the sun is coming from behind the painter. It's an effect that makes me think of Russian landscape paintings. I found it appealing that after the sun rose that morning, the autumn colors became muted and washed out.
Shoreline Shadows, 30 x 15 oil on canvasboard
Cypress and Ruins, Fiesoli, Italy, 12 x 16 oil on panel
In these Roman ruins, there were baths on the left, and a sports bar in the foreground.

Get up early enough and you’ll always find something beautiful out there.
SOLD
Christmas Lights, 12 x 16 oil on panel
After the folks turned in, I set up my easel in the garage and opened up the overhead door. The interior light from the garage added a cool, eerie cast to the illuminated tree.
SOLD
Fall in Spring Valley, 12 x 16 oil on panel
My painting pal, Richard Abraham, loves this area in southwestern Wisconsin known as the Driftless Zone. It's where the glaciers stopped and melted, leaving a terrain of deep ravines and rich soil pastures.
SOLD
Gettysburg: The Angle, 12 x 20 oil on panel
Painted on location at the Hallowed Ground in Pennsylvania. This tree is fairly recent growth. 146 years ago, on a hot July afternoon,
this stone wall is about as far as old Bobby Lee's boys got. The Confederates crossed this mile-long field from the tree line on Seminary Ridge. As I looked across, I tried to imagine what was in their minds as they stepped into the open, knowing it was unlikely they would survive the hour.
Morning on Flour Lake, 12 x 20 oil on panel
Painted while sitting in a boat on a lake off the Gunflint Trail. Third Place award, Grand Marais Art Colony plein air, 2009.
SOLD
Young Pine, Dawn, 8 x 10 oil on panel
When the sun creeps up behind the trees, warm light sometimes seems to wrap around the branches and needles, making them glow.
SOLD
Grand Marais Woods, 12 x 16 oil on panel
I didn't see any furry-toed Hobbits while painting this but I was looking for 'em.
SOLD
Hot Summer Morning, 10 x 8 oil on panel
SOLD
Split Rail, Wildflowers, 12 x 16 oil on panel
Landscapes are generally ruled by the eternal horizontal, regularly planted with verticals. My eyes, then, often dart toward the diagonals.
Boreal Sunset, 15 x 20 oil on canvas
A magical time of day up north
SOLD
Autumn Color, 12 x 16 oil on panel
Painted in the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden at Wirth Park in Minneapolis. Fall is a tough time to paint in Minnesota. There's just so much chroma! I think I hit all points on the color wheel with this one.
SOLD
Morning Overlooking the Wisconsin River, 16 x 12 oil on panel
SOLD
Sawtooth Mountain Sunset, 12 x 16 oil on panel
SOLD
Forest Glow, 19 x 24 oil on canvas
